Places to look for free courseware, textbooks, etc.




  • Flat World Knowledge Textbooks were free in the past. There are now fees for using books on this site. Early versions of Flatworld Knowledge can still be found at Saylor.org https://www.saylor.org/books/
  • FLOSS Manuals is more than a collection of manuals about free and open source software, it is also the community. Anyone can contribute to a manual – to fix a spelling mistake, add a more detailed explanation, write a new chapter, or start a whole new manual on a topic.
  • Free High School Science Texts (FHSST) "Setting science education free in South Africa." Now part of http://www.siyavula.com/
  • Free Science
  • Freetechbooks.com This site lists free online computer science, engineering and programming books, textbooks and lecture notes, all of which are legally and freely available over the Internet.

  • Global Text Project Free textbooks for subjects such as business, computing, education, health, science, social science.
  • Green Tea Press Computer science books with open licenses by the publisher of Think Python, Think Bayes, and other books by Allen Downey.

  • HippoCampus Study materials for some higher education courses middle school through college including videos. Partners with other sites for educational material.

  • Intech Open Books for science, technology, health sciences.
    More than 850 scientific books available along with a few open access journals in engineering, technology, life sciences, health sciences and a few books for social sciences and the humanities.
  • Internet Archive Open Educational Resources. Includes links to lectures, math, environment science materials, etc.
  • InTech. Books in science, technology, health sciences.
  • iTunes U. Requires use of Apple products, but these courses will be accessible to some.
  • Intute Archive of a database of resources for higher ed, each reviewed by an academic specialist



  • KFUPM Open Courseware (King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals) Open courseware.
  • Khan Academy Videos for math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more.

  • Lecturefox. Indexes some free university lectures.
  • MedEdPortall. from the Association of American Medical Colleges
  • MERLOT II A curated collection of learning objects for higher education
  • MIT OpenCourseWare MIT's OCW project. Extensive site of courses from MIT

  • NobaProject Psychology - open textbook, open modules which can be customized. (Low cost print versions are available)
  • NPTEL National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning. Courses related to engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, etc. put together by seven institutions in India. This site provides access to course lectures on video. (In some cases only the syllabus is available.) Faculty are encouraged to use these materials to develop courses for their own institions. Users may download the videos. University of the People has been given permission to provide access to these materials.

  • OAD Directory of Open Access Publishers Publishers of open access books.May provide some leads on where to look. Maintained by Simmons College.
  • OCWC OpenCourseWare Consortium of higher ed institutions providing access to free and open educational materials.
  • OER Commons Free to use, openly licensed resources K-12 to college courses
  • OnlineProgrammingBooks.com "We publish details about books which are provided by publishers or authors on their websites legally and free of charge."
  • Open Textbook Library (Housed at University of Minnesota) The Open Textbook Library is supported by the Center for Open Education and the Open Textbook Network.
  • OpenCulture. 200 Free Textbooks: A Meta Collection (Other OpenCulture lists include free courses, audio books, videos, etc.)
  • OpenLearn Over 600 free online courses from The Open University (UK) [New webpage soon! December 2016]
  • Open.Michigan (University of Michigan) Open initiatives supposting free/open education resources.
  • OpenStax. OpenStax textbooks include College Physics, Introduction to Sociology, Biology, Concepts of Biology and Anatomy and Physiology, and Introduction to Statistics. More textbooks are in the works. (Project housed at Rice University)
  • OpenTextbooks:SUNY (Open Textbooks SUNY) Open SUNY Textbooks is an open access textbook publishing initiative established by State University of New York libraries and supported by SUNY Innovative Instruction Technology Grants.(Includes titles such as Good Corporation, Bad Corporation: Corporate Social Responsibility in the Global Economy; Writing in College: From Competence to Excellence; Foundations of Academic Success: Words of Wisdom
  • OpenTextBooks (University of Minnesota). A catalog of open textbooks that will be reviewed by U of Minnesota faculty
  • Orange Grove Florida's digital repository of open textbooks. Includes Open Courseware, Open Textbooks, 3d object models, learning modules, and videos. Search for higher education resources and K-12 resources.
  • Oregon: OpenOregon Education Resources. A list of OER that are used in Oregon Community Colleges




  • Questia, An online library of books and journals not open, but may be worth the cost for some students. Allows for a free trial but after seven days requires a fee-based subscription which costs $20 a month. Yearly subscriptions somewhat cheaper.
