This list is an attempt to corral the best places to find open access electronic books and electronic journals.

Reminder: Freely accessible, open access resources may still be subject to copyright. While open access resources can be used for your course work or your personal use, check copyright before making other uses of resources discovered at these sites. Of course always cite your sources including works in the public domain.

ArXiv.org E-Prints
A fully automated electronic archive and distribution server for research papers. As of November 2017, ArXiv.org lists “1,327,800 e-prints in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology, Quantitative Finance, Statistics, Electrical Engineering and Systems Science, and Economics.”

Bielefeld Academic Search Engine BASE.
BASE searches academic open access web resources from content sources such as OpenArchives, ROAR, OpenDOAR, DSpace and other respositories. " Use the ADVANCED search tab and scroll down and make sure that "open access" is checked and "uncheck" non-open access and "uncheck" unknown.

The Universidad Complutense de Madrid is a partner in the Google Book search project. This involves the mass digitisation of out of print books and copyright free pamphlets from the University library. These cover all aspects of the sciences, social sciences and humanities. There is a particular focus on materials relating to the history, literature, culture, politics and social life of Spain and Spanish regions. They include rare examples of Spanish historic books as well as some English language materials. Chemistry Center is the open access chemistry platform from Springer Science+Business Media, committed to the free and widespread dissemination of chemical research. Cornell University Library ebooks This section of the Internet Archive provides free access to several thousand full text out of copyright books digitised from Cornell University Libraries. OCR and derivative formats created by the Internet Archive. They include many classic and rare books covering a wide range of subject areas. The site can be browsed or searched by keyword. Dialnet : revistas accesibles
A current listing of over 1,100 open access ejournals, journals primarily written and published in the Spanish language. Dialnet is a service of the Universidad de La Rioja in Spain. More than a simple directory, this service also offers an easy and uniform way to access the full-text of the journal articles. Includes some English-language articles as well. A reviewer of this site suggests "The Google-visible titles/full-text of all the articles may also be searched by using the following Google search: "key phrase" site:dialnet.unirioja.es/servlet/articulo?codigo - there are many thousands of English-language articles to be found in this way." DOAB Directory of Open Access Books A small, but growing collection of freely-accessible books.

DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals Online full text access to articles from more than six thousand free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.
Efforts have been made to include only journals that have gone through a quality control check.


DP.LA (Digital Public Library of America). Over 1.5 million ebooks from libraries, museums, and archives - some in languages other than English. Electronic Journals Library / Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek (EZB) This gateway offers access to thousands of full-text journals in all subject areas. It is used by a number of German universities as a gateway to their ejournal collections, but is also a useful way of accessing free online journals for non-members of these institutions. The accessibility of each is indicated by the traffic light system of different colours: green = free full-text, yellow = only accessible for users of the host institution, (for external users, there is usually access to tables of contents and abstracts), red = no access to full-text, (but usually tables of contents and abstracts are available). This resource is hosted by the Library of the University of Regensburg, Germany and presented in both English and German language versions.

Free Medical Journals Provides access to more than two thousand medical journals.
Some journals embargo the most recent issues. For examples, the New England Journal of Medicine articles are free after six months.


FreeTechBooks.com All the books, textbooks, and lecture notes listed in this site are "freely and legally available."

Google Books Google Books provides full text access to books in the public domain or with permission of publishers. Some full text may not be available to users in every country. Other publishers may allow limited views or snippets of the books. Google Books also provides access to some magazines.

Google Scholar Google Scholar indexes "articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites. Google Scholar helps you find relevant work across the world of scholarly research." Proprietary works are indexed as well, so much of this material may only be available in a nearby library or for a fee. However some resources are accessible to all. Try searching for your terms and then including filetype:pdf as a term. This seems to restrict search results to items that are freely accessbile. Example

HighWire Press SOME articles are available for free. Highwire Press publishes and/or distributes material from scholarly publishers and societies indexing over five million full-text articles. Information Bridge DOE Scientific and Technical Information provides free public access to over 266,000 full-text documents and bibliographic citations of Department of Energy (DOE) research report literature. Documents are primarily from 1991 forward and were produced by DOE.

International Development Research Centre (IDRC) social and political sciences ebooks
This site provides information, and in many instances free full text access, to books published by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) which is a Canadian Crown corporation working in association with leading research centres. Key topics include peace, conflict, and development; globalization, growth and poverty governance and health; women's rights and citizenship. JSTOR Open Access Books Open access scholarly ebooks from University of California Press, University of Michigan Press, ANU Press (Australia) (roughly 500 titles as of March 2017).

JurnJURN is a free academic search-engine, enabling keyword searching of the online contents of more than 4,000 ejournals in the arts and humanities offering significant free content. JURN also searches a small number of selected full-text conference proceedings, and free book chapters from selected university presses. JURN runs via a Google Custom Search. The full listing of all journal titles indexed can be download as a single PDF file, and there is also a linked directory of 2,500 English-language titles organized by subject. The majority of titles indexed by JURN are in English, but there is also some coverage of French and Spanish journals.

National Academies Press Home page of the National Academies Press, the publishing house 'created by the [US] National Academies to publish the reports issued by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council'. The website gives free public access to over 3000 titles in a wide variety of subjects, including Education, Industry & Economics, Environmental Issues, Public Policy, Research Issues etc. To read a book online, select the link to the free online version, then choose a chapter. NDLTD An international non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the adoption, creation, use, dissemination and preservation of electronic analogues to the traditional paper-based theses and dissertations. It offers the world's largest digital library of theses and dissertations of academic institutions worldwide. It aims to cover all significant graduate research results, in all areas, all nations, and all languages.

OAD: Open Access Directory Includes a list of publishers of open access books and other useful lists


OAPEN (Open Access Publishing in European Networks) provides search tools including search the entire text to discover open access peer-reviewed books from across Europe. Includes works in Danish, Dutch, English, German, and other European languages.

PeerJ Medicine, biology and life sciences preprints

PLoS One Reports on primary, peer-reviewed scientific and media research from any scientific discipline. All articles are open-access.

PMC: PubMedCentral PubMedCentral (PMC) is a free full-text archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine.

REDIB (Red Iberoamericana de Innovación y Conocimiento Científico). The REDIB is a platform for aggregating scientific and academic content in electronic formats produced in the Ibero-American space

RePEc (Research Papers in Economics)
A collaborative effort of hundreds of volunteers in 68 countries to enhance the dissemination of research in economics. The heart of the project is a decentralized database of working papers, journal articles and software components. All RePEc material is freely available.

Royal Society PublishingThe Royal Society journal archive provides free to access to more than 250 years of leading scientific research. All articles more than 70 years old are provided open access. Sabinet Open access journal collection Sabinet is a South African based information technology company which publishes a range of journals and ejournal titles. This section of its website offers free access to a collection of over 40 South African open access full text ejournals from its own and other publishers. These cover a range of subject areas including: the sciences, social sciences and humanities. Examples include Arms Control Africa 2002 onwards; South African Health review 2001 onwards and South African Business review 2003 onwards. Most are academic refereed titles. Scilit offers access to over 1,600,000 open access articles. Scilit is experimenting with ways to index scientific and scholarly literature.
